In Memory of Our Founder, Joan Kemper
Ojai Performing Arts Theater was born from the vision and determination of Joan Kemper, whose love of the arts and devotion to the Ojai community shaped the organization from the very beginning.
Joan believed deeply that a town like Ojai deserved a vibrant performing arts presence. Through her generosity, encouragement, and sheer force of spirit, she helped make performances happen year after year—even without a permanent home for the arts. She inspired artists, audiences, and supporters alike, bringing people together around the shared experience of theater, music, and storytelling.
Practically no one in Ojai was untouched by Joan’s generosity—from the hospital and community services to the arts she loved so dearly. Her passion for creating opportunities for performance in the valley continues to guide OPAT’s work.
While the dream of a permanent performing arts home in Ojai remains unfinished, Joan’s vision endures in every production, reading, and gathering of artists and audiences that OPAT brings to life. to life.
